Bill Gates Prefers an Android Device Over iPhones, and Has a Convincing Reason For it

Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist, Bill Gates has a favourite kind of phone operating system.

While Apple enjoys almost cult status for anyone who owns an iPhone, the software mogul recently revealed he has a personal preference for Androids.

Gates revealed his preference this week while participating in his first meeting on Clubhouse, the increasingly popular invite-only conversation app. Ironically, Clubhouse is only limited to Apple devices at the moment.

Gates was interviewed by journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin, and given that the Clubhouse app is currently only available on iOS, Sorkin questioned whether Gates regularly uses an iPhone or if he prefers iOS over Android.

“I actually use an Android phone,” Gates said. “Because I want to keep track of everything, I’ll often play around with iPhones, but the one I carry around happens to be Android.”

“So Android vs Apple – is this a religious thing?” asked Sorkin.

“Some of the Android manufacturers pre-install Microsoft software in a way that makes it easy for me,” Gates replied. “They’re more flexible about how the software connects up with the operating system. So that’s what I ended up getting used to. You know, a lot of my friends have ‌iPhone‌, so there’s no purity.”

He also explained that some manufacturers (like Samsung) also ship some Microsoft apps by default, it was easier for him because of how those apps could connect with the operating system.

Clubhouse co-founder Paul Davison, who was also in the room briefly, also told Gates and Sorkin that an Android version of the app is the “top feature” that they’re currently working towards and are most excited about, “ reports MacRumours.

While users on iOS can use both Microsoft and Google’s apps on their devices, the platform limits the kind of integration with system features due to the locked-down nature of Apple’s platform.

Android, owned by Google, is open source and is provided as an OS platform for various smartphone manufacturers, which allows these manufacturers to customise the apps on their phones as per their wishes.

On the other hand, iOS is proprietary software developed by Apple, meant exclusively for its hardware, meaning that it has been developed as per the design that Apple has envisioned for its own phones.

Bill Gates has a new book out, called ‘How to Avoid a Climate Disaster.’ One of his top solutions involved synthetic meat – which is why he has been recently participating in interviews around the book.
